I do think it would be weird to ask to review your recommendation letter. If you're worried that someone won't write you a good letter, then either 1) your letter-writer doesn't know you well enough or you know he/she doesn't think very highly of you, or 2) you may not have performed in his/her class in a way that would lend itself to a positive recommendation. One thing you can do when you ask the letter-writer for a recommendation is to phrase your request in a way that makes it clear that if they don't have something nice to say, they shouldn't agree to write the letter. Ask them "would you feel comfortable writing me a positive letter of recommendation" rather than just "will you write me a letter." This will give the recommender a chance to turn you down upfront instead of write you a lukewarm or bad letter. Another thing that many graduate school applications allow you to do is to check a box whether you "waive your rights to access the letter" or not. Basically, if you check this box, you reserve the right to login to the system and see the letter someone wrote you...but this fact is communicated to the admissions committee. And, personally, I am always highly skeptical of applicants who choose to retain rights over seeing their letters...makes me suspicious and makes me not trust what the letter says.

Great article! I finished mine, and this advice is perfect. Although, an undergraduate student recently came up to me after class and said she had read my dissertation. It's good to know that it is not as important of a document as you think, but also keep in mind that you never know who might read it.

is there a diplomatic way to have the recommendation first and be able to review it before submitting it? iow, is it weird to ask someone to send you the recommendation instead of giving them the address of the ultimate recipient/audience?

Daren,

Great post even though it's been a couple years ago! I'll be graduating this summer and have actually accepted a job in consulting. Coming from a hard science background, I've also thought a lot about whether to stick to the hard sciences or go into business or consulting. While I ultimately chose the latter, it's great to read about the various reasons people have for and against consulting. It's also good to see someone put in so much thought into evaluating their future career choices and goals. It's surprising how few people actually do this!

Best,
